Taking Steps While In Salaah

Taking Steps While In Salaah

Question posed to Shaykhana Ash-Shayk Ahmad As-Subay'ee حفظه الله و رعاه via WhatsApp.

Question:
As Salaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi our virtuous Shaykh. May Allaah bless you. A brother has a question: I see brothers who may come late to the prayer, or missed a raka'ah. Then, after the the Imaam ends the prayer, they move (by stepping)backwards , and or sideways. Also, some brothers take (as many as) five steps forward. Is there any text to support this?

Answer:
wa 'alaykumus salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh. Movement for other than a benefit(or reason)(1) in prayer and for other than a need should not be done. If you find a need or the movement was for a benefit in Salaah, therefore it isn't a problem in that. For this is affirmed from the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم

(1)A valid reason to move in salah is: The person notices something impure on their clothing in salaah, they have a valid excuse to move, in order to remove the garment. An example of this is, impurities on the shoes. This is established in the authentic hadeeth. Jibreel informed the Prophetصلى الله عليه و سلم about the filth on his shoe, and he removed them while praying, and then continued praying.
