Shaykh Saalih Al-Fawzaan حفظه الله ورعاه said: " and the sunnah is to break with رطب (wet dates) and if you can't find, then تمر (dry dates), and if you can't find, then with water(1); for the saying of Anas رضى الله عنه

"Anas رضى الله عنه said that the Prophet صلى الله عليه use to break his fast with wet dates before he prayed. If he didn't find the wet dates, dry dates, if he didn't find dry dates, a sip of water..." Reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawuud and At-Tirmidhi.

Therefore, if you don't find wet dates and not dry dates and no water, break upon what is easy from food and drink."

(1) This is the order in which the Prophet صلى الله عليه broke his fast:

First: Wet dates,
Second: If not available, dry dates
Third: If not available, water

This is a sunnah we are in contrast with and have left. At times, we break with dry dates first, other times with wet, other times with water and yet other times with chocolate. And, and, and. There is no harm in breaking with what we choose, from the available permissible edible items, but the barakah is in the sunnah and wisdom.
