Neglected Sunnah: Asking Allaah for Beneficial Knowledge and Implementation
Bismillaah Al-Hamdulillaah wa salatu
wa salaamu 'ala rasulullaah
Amma-ba'd
On the authority of Anas ibn Maalik
(radiAllaahu Ta'aala 'anhu) who said: The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to say: Allaahumman fa'nee bi-maa
'allam-ta-nee wa 'allim-nee maa yanfa'u-nee war zuq-nee 'ilman
yanfa'u-nee (which means: Oh Allaah, benefit me by
that which you have taught me, teach me that which will benefit me, and provide
me with knowledge that will benefit me). [an-Nasaa`ee in
al-Kubraa (7868), al-Haakim (1:510)]
As has preceded, Shaikh Saalih ibn
Fawzaan al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah 'ala as-Sunnah) said in his explanation of
this hadeeth: "(This is because) a person could have knowledge
of something but not gain any benefit from it, and his knowledge (would
then) become a proof against him. He would become like a donkey carrying books,
carrying around knowledge but not receiving anything from them. So the intent
is not merely to gain knowledge. However, the intent is (to gain)
knowledge and action ---> the knowledge that benefits
(its possessor)."
Anas bin Maalik al-Ansaari was
the Prophet's servant for 10 years. Anas said: "The
Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم)never left anything of good from the
Dunya and the Hereafter except that he supplicated it for me." [Abu
Dawood, authenticated by Al-Albaanee]
Anas narrated: My mother (Umm Sulaim
who offered Anas as a servant to the Prophet) said: "Oh Allaah's
Messenger! Please invoke Allaah on behalf of your servant." He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:"Oh
Allaah! Increase his wealth and children, and bestow Your Blessing on whatever
You give him." [Saheeh Bukhaaree, in The Book of Invocations]
Allaah (Tabarak wa
Ta'aala) answered the Prophet's du'aa and blessed Anas with much
wealth and children, such that none from the Ansaar had more wealth than Anas,
and Anas - who lived over 100 years - had over 120 offspring
who died before him. Anas was from the Ansaar (رضي الله عنهم) whom
Allaah said He is pleased with. The Ansaar firmly believed in
and supported the Messenger (صلى
الله عليه وسلم) and
supported the rest of the Muhajiroon (رضي
الله عنهم) in a
beautiful manner.

The Virtues of
the Ansaar (رضي الله عنهم) - in addition to the Virtues of the
Ansaar that have already preceded
Narrated by Al-Bara` (radiAllaahu
'anhu): I heard the Prophet (صلى الله عليه
وسلم) saying (or the
Prophet said:)"None loves the Ansaar except a believer, and none hates
them except a hypocrite. So Allaah will love him who loves them, and He will
hate him who hates them."[Saheeh Bukhaaree, in The Book of the Merits
of the Ansaar]
Narrated Anas bin Maalik (radiAllaahu 'anhu): The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)said: "The sign of Belief is to love the Ansaar, and the sign of hypocrisy is to hate the Ansaar."[Saheeh Bukhaaree, in The Book of the Merits of the Ansaar]
Narrated by Ghailan bin Jareer: I asked Anas: "Tell me about the name 'Al-Ansaar.' Did you call yourselves by it, or did Allaah call you by it?" He said: "Allaah called us by it." We used to visit Anas (at Basra) and he used to narrate to us the virtues and deeds of the Ansaar, and he used to address me or a person from the tribe of Al-Azd and say, 'Your tribe did so-and-so on such-and-such a day.' [Saheeh Bukhaaree, in The Book of the Merits of the Ansaar]
Narrated by Abu Huraira (radiAllaahu 'anhu): The Prophet or Abul-Qasim (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "If the Ansaar took their way through a valley or a mountain pass, I would take Ansaar's valley. And but for the migration, I would have been one of the Ansaar." Abu Huraira used to say: "The Prophet is not unjust (by saying so). May my parents be sacrificed for him, for the Ansaar sheltered and helped him," or said a similar sentence.[Saheeh Bukhaaree, in The Book of the Merits of the Ansaar]
Narrated by Anas: When 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf (radiAllaahu 'anhu) came to us, Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم)made a bond of fraternity between him and Sa'd bin Ar-Rabee' who was a rich man. Sa'd (radiAllaahu 'anhu) said, "The Ansar know that I am the richest of all of them, so I will divide my property into two parts between me and you, and I have two wives; see which of the two you like so that I may divorce her and you can marry her after she becomes lawful to you by her passing the prescribed period (i.e. 'Idda) of divorce." 'Abdur-Rahman said: "May Allaah bless your family (i.e. wives) for you." (But 'Abdur-Rahman asked for direction to the market and went to the market) and did not return on that day except with some gain of dried yogurt and butter. He went on trading just a few days till he came to Allaah's Messenger bearing the traces of yellow scent over his clothes. Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) asked him: "What is this scent?" He replied,"I have married a woman from the Ansaar." Allaah's Messenger asked: "How much mahr have you given?" He said, "A date-stone weight of gold or a golden date-stone." The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)said: "Arrange a marriage banquet even with a sheep." [Saheeh Bukhaaree, in The Book of the Merits of the Ansaar]

Narrated by Abu Hamza: (A man from the Ansar) said, "Every nation has followers and (oh Prophet) we have followed you, so invoke Allaah to let our followers be considered from us (as Ansaar like ourselves)." So the Prophet(صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "Oh Allaah! Let their followers be considered as Ansaar like themselves." [Saheeh Bukhaaree, in The Book of the Merits of the Ansaar]
Narrated by Anas bin Malik: Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم)said: "There is no life except the life of the Hereafter. So, oh Allaah: Improve the state of the Ansaar and the Muhajiroon." And Anas added that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) also said: "Oh Allaah: Forgive the Ansaar." [Saheeh Bukhaaree, in The Book of the Merits of the Ansaar]
Narrated by Anas bin Malik: On the day of the battle of the Trench (i.e. Ghazwat-ul-Khandaq), the Ansaar used to say, "We are those who have given the pledge of allegiance to Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) for Jihaad as long as we live." The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)replied to them: "Oh Allaah! There is no life except the life of the Hereafter. So please honor the Ansaar and the Muhajiroon (Emigrants)." [Saheeh Bukhaaree, in The Book of the Merits of the Ansaar]
Narrated by Sahl (radiAllaahu 'anhu): Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to us while we were digging the trench and carrying out the earth on our backs. Allaah's Messenger then said: "Oh Allaah! There is no life except the life of the Hereafter. So please forgive the Muhajiroon and the Ansaar." [Saheeh Bukhaaree, in The Book of the Merits of the Ansaar]
And the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
من
سب أصحابي ، فعليه لعنة الله و الملائكة و الناس أجمعين
Whoever abuses my Companions, upon them is
the curse of Allaah, the angels and the people. [Reported from Ibn 'Abbaas
and Ibn 'Umar by at-Tabaraanee. The hadeeth is Hasan as
declared by al-Albaanee in as-Saheehah (no. 2340)]
Narrated
by Abu Huraira: A man came to the Prophet (صلى
الله عليه وسلم). The
Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) sent a messenger to his wives
(to bring something for that man to eat), but they said that they had nothing
except water. Then Allaah's Messenger (صلى
الله عليه وسلم) said: "Who
will take this (person) or entertain him as a guest?" An Ansaar
man said, "I." So he took him to his wife and said to her: "Entertain
generously the guest of Allaah's Messenger." She said, "We
have got nothing except the meals of my children." He said: "Prepare
your meal, light your lamp, and let your children sleep if they ask for
supper." So she prepared her meal, lighted her lamp and made her
children sleep, and then stood up pretending to mend her lamp, but she put it
off. Then both of them pretended to be eating, but they really went to bed
hungry. In the morning, the Ansaari went to Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم)who
said: "Tonight Allaah laughed or wondered at your
action." Then Allaah revealed:
...and give them (emigrants)
preference over themselves, even though they were in need of that. And
whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, such are they who will be the
successful. (Al-Hashr, ayah 9) [Saheeh
Bukhaaree, in The Book of the Merits of the Ansar] In another
narration of this hadeeth, the companion's name was mentioined. It was Abu
Talhah Al-Ansaari (radiAllaahu 'anhu).
The following tafseer of the above ayah is from Tafseer Ibn Katheer: meaning, they preferred giving to the needy rather than attending to their own needs, and began by giving the people before their own selves, even though they too were in need. An authentic Hadeeth stated that the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

An authentic Hadeeth stated that the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
أَفْضَلُ
الصَّدَقَةِ جُهْدُ الْمُقِل
The best charity is that given when
one is in need and struggling. This
exalted rank is better than the rank of those whom Allaah described in His
statements:
وَيُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ عَلَى
حُبِّه
And they give food, inspite of their
love for it (or for the love of Him)... (Al-Insaan,
ayah 8)
and:
وَآتَى الْمَالَ عَلَى حُبِّه
...and gives his wealth, in spite of
love for it... (al-Baqarah, ayah 177)
The latter give charity even though
they love the wealth they give, not that they really need it, nor that it is
necessary for them to keep it. The former prefer others to themselves even
though they are in need and have a necessity for what they spend in
charity.
Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq (radiAllaahu 'anhu) gave away all his wealth in charity, and Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) asked him:
Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq (radiAllaahu 'anhu) gave away all his wealth in charity, and Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) asked him:
مَا
أَبْقَيْتَ لِأَهْلِكَ
What did you keep for your family? And he (Abu Bakr) said: "I kept for them Allaah and His Messenger."'Ikrimah (bin Abu Jahl) and two other wounded fighters were offered water when they were injured during the battle of Al-Yarmuk, and each one of them said that the sip of water should be given to another of the three wounded men. They did so even though they were seriously injured and craving water. When the water reached the third man, he and the other two died, and none of them drank any of the water! May Allaah be pleased with them, and make them pleased with Him. [End of Tafseer from Tafseer Ibn Katheer]
Note: May Allaah have mercy on all the scholars of hadeeth.
