Neglected Sunan Related to Waking Up

- What to say when waking up

Hudhaifa (radiAllaahu 'anhu) narrated: "Whenever the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) intended to go to bed, he would recite: Bismika Allaahumma amutu wa ahya (which means: With Your name, oh Allaah, I die and I live). And when he woke up from his sleep, he would say: Al-Hamdulillaahi-il-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana, wa ilayhi an-nushoor (which means: All Praise is for Allaah, Who has made us alive after He made us die (lesser death which is sleep[1]), and unto Him is the Resurrection)." [Bukhaaree, in The Book of Invocations] [2]

- Wiping Sleep from Your Face

Ibn 'Abbaas (radiAllaahu 'anhumma) narrated that once he spent the night at the house of his aunt Maymoonah (radiAllaahu 'anha), the wife of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم). He said: "I lay on the cushion transversely, and Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) lay along with his wife in the lengthwise direction of the pillow. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) slept until a little before or after the middle of the night. He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) woke up and began to wipe the sleep from his face with both his hands..." [Bukhaaree, Muslim]

- Washing one's hands upon Waking up from Sleep Before Putting his hand in the Utensil

Abu Hurairah (radiAllaahu 'anhu) narrated: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "When anyone amongst you wakes up from sleep, he should wash his hands three times before putting his hand in the utensil, for he does not know where his hand was during the night." [Agreed upon; this is the wording of Muslim

Abu Sufyan (jazahu Allaahu khairan) relayed that Imaam 'Abdul-'Azeez Ibn 'Abdullaah Ibn Baaz (d. 1421H, rahimahullaah) said this sunnah is obligatory.

- Al-Istinthaar when Waking up from sleep to make Wudu`

Abu Hurairah (radiAllaahu 'anhu) narrated: the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "When one of you wakes up from his sleep to make wudu`, then let him make istinthaar (inhaling water into the nose and then blowing it out) three times, for verily shaytaan sleeps inside his nostrils." [Bukhaaree]

Abu Hurairah (radiAllaahu 'anhu) narrated: Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "When one of you wakes up from his sleep, then let him make istinthaar (inhaling water into the nose and then blowing it out) three times, for verily shaytaan sleeps inside his nostrils." [Agreed upon]

- What to say when Waking up at night

On the authority of 'Ubaadah ibnus-Saamit (radiAllaahu 'anhu): The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم)said: "Whoever wakes up at night, and says:

La illaaha il Allaahu wahdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shayin Qadeer. Al-Hamdulillaahi, wa Subhan-Allaahi, wa la illaah ilAllaah, wa Allaahu akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billaahil 'Aliyul-'Adheem

(which means: There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah Alone, He has no partners, His is the Dominion and for Him is all praise, and He is capable of all things. All praise is for Allaah, and free is Allaah from any imperfection, and there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah, and Allaah is the Greatest, and there is no capability nor is there any power except with Allaah, The Most High, The Most Great.)

Then he says:

Allaahumma ighfirlee
(Oh Allaah: Forgive me). Or invokes (Allaah), he will be responded to, and if he performs ablution (and prays), his prayer will be accepted." [Bukhaaree, Chapter of The Tahajjud (Night) Prayer]

The wording in Ibn Maajah (2/335) is slightly different:

La illaaha il Allaahu wahdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shayin Qadeer. Subhaan-Allaahi, wal-Hamdulillaahi, wa la illaaha ilAllaah, wa Allaahu akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billaahil 'Aliyul-'Adheem (which means: There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah Alone, He has no partners, His is the Dominion and for Him is all praise, and He is capable of all things. Free is Allaah from
any
imperfection, and all Praise is for Allaah, and there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah, and Allaah is the Greatest, and there is no capability nor is there any power except with Allaah, The Most High
 , The Most Great.)

Rab ighfirlee (My Lord: Forgive me).

- Reciting the last Ayaat of Soorat Aali-'Imraan after waking up for Tahajjud, Qiyaam al-Layl

Al-Bukhaaree recorded that Ibn 'Abbaas (radiAllaahu 'anhumma) said: "I slept one night at the house of my aunt Maymoonah. The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) spoke with his wife [Maymoonah, radiAllaahu 'anha] for a while and then went to sleep. When it was the third part of the night, he sat up, looked at the sky and recited:

Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding. (Aali 'Imraan, ayah 190)

The Prophet then stood up, performed ablution, used Siwak (to clean his teeth) and prayed eleven units of prayer. When Bilal (radiAllaahu 'anhu) called the Adhaan, the Prophet prayed two units of prayer, went out (to the Masjid) and led the people in the Dawn prayer." [Fat-h Al-Baari (8:83); this was also recorded by Muslim (1:530)

Notes:

[1] Allaah Ta'aala said (what means): It is Allaah Who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply. (Az-Zumar, ayah 42

While explaining this verse from Soorat Az-Zumar, Shaykh Saalih Ibn Fawzaan al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah 'ala as-Sunnah) said: "...So He, Subhanahu wa Ta'aala, mentioned two deaths or passings (in this verse). The ultimate one which is death and the lesser one which is sleep. Because sleep in reality is a form of dying as He, The Most High, said (what means): It is He Who takes your souls by night (when you are asleep), and has knowledge of all that you have done by day, then He raises (wakes) you up again that a term appointed (your life period) be fulfilled, then (in the end) unto Him will be your return. Then He will inform you of that which you used to do. (Al-An'aam, ayah 60Thus Allaah mentions in this verse that He takes the souls by way of death and by way of sleep..." For the Shaykh's explanation, click here.

[2] The following is how Imaam Ibn Baaz (d. 1420H, rahimahullaah) implemented this hadeeth with his children. Concerning Imaam 'Abdul-'Azeez ibn Baaz (d. 1420H, rahimahullaah), his son Ahmad narrated:

"The Shaykh used to call his children via the internal phone to wake them up for Salaat al-Fajr. And when he called them, he would recite the (authentic and recommended) supplication: Al-Hamdulillaahi-il-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana, wa ilayhi an-nushoor (which means: All Praise is for Allaah, Who has made us alive after He made us die (lesser death which is sleep), and unto Him is the Resurrection)

Since they were overcome by sleep, he would ask them to repeat this du'aa until he felt sure they had woken up!" [al-Imaam Ibn Baaz - duroos wa mawaaqif wa 'ibar - Page 71]
