Soccer & Jerseys

Ash Shaykh Muqbil, may Allaah have mercy upon him, was asked what is the ruling on playing Soccer ?

A: As for playing soccer then it is a must that one knows the outcome of it (before playing it) and it is also a must that one knows the reason for it (the game soccer) was imported to the lands of the Muslims. Playing soccer or playing in general is not haraam if you give yourself time (to play such as) an hour or a half so you can become energetic to read (to complete one studies) this is the case if you do not find a job of physical labor but as for if you are farmer or you posses a job of physical labor then you should start with it due to it being an exercise. As for if you do not find any physical labor then it is okay( to play soccer ).

The enemies of Islaam… brought the game soccer (to the lands of the Muslims) in order to divert the youth from learning the Quraan and the Sunnah…"

The Reference is the Book: Qam'ul Maanid, page: 397, print: Daarulhadeeth

Also ash Shaykh Albaani , may Allaah have mercy upon him, has mentioned in his tape"al Lahwu" that playing soccer becomes haraam if it leads to enemity between those playing or if the awrah of those playing becomes apparent.

Ash-Shaykh Al-`Allaamah Saalih Al-Fawzaan was asked the following:

Q: He who wears what the disbelievers wear which has at the back of the clothing the name of a disbelieving football player; however he does not intent to imitate them with this.....?1

A: This is venerating the disbeliever, as long as he wears the clothing which has the name of the Disbeliever or his picture it is considered as venerating the Disbeliever, thus this is impermissible, at the least it is impermissible, and if he intends to venerate him then apostasy is  feared for him. The Ruling on Having Soccer Players Names on the Clothes

The Trustworthy Adviser, Shaykh Yahya Ibn Alee Al-Hajooree, may Allah preserve him and increase him in piety, was asked:

Q: What is the ruling on the clothes that have some of the names of the soccer players on them?

A: "They're names are to be erased and it is not befitting for the student of knowledge or caller to Allah or even the common Muslim to have the name of the player written on his clothes, and we advise the Muslims with distancing themselves from these clothes that have the phrases of propaganda for some of the players on them."

Al-Kanz Ath-Thameen, Vol.4, Page 170-171

And the Shaykh and other than him from the people of knowledge, May Allah preserve them, have warned against soccer many times and mentioned the harms that are found in it, from them:

1: The lack of loving and hating for the sake of Allah:

You like and support a specific soccer player because of the way he plays or because of his tricks that he uses during the game but in reality he is a disbeliever in Allah, the Most High and in the Last Day. But you do not think about this because you are too busy trying to win the game!!

2: Lack of Good Manners and Etiquettes:

From the things which are well- known in soccer is that the person who has good manners and etiquettes, once he gets on the pitch he's a totally different person from the aspect of manners and etiquettes. If he sees someone who is not playing good he will shout at him and raise his voice at him and perhaps even curse him even if he is own Muslim brother!!! Allahul-Must'aan.

3: The Revealing of the `Awrah

When he wants to play football he would put on tight shorts which reveal the knee and a part of his thigh and it has come upon the authority of Ibn Abbaas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "The thigh is `Awrah" – reported by Al-Bukhari in his 'Saheeh'.

4: Waste of Time

It is a big waste of time, you are not in the remembrance of Allah, nor in His Worship, nor seeking knowledge, nor doing any righteous actions rather you're in a state of heedlessness, probably falling into sin whilst you know not. As, for those that claim that it is only exercise then they are advised to try something which does not include the disobedience of Allah, the Most High and has no doubt in it, and also to look after that which will benefit him in the hereafter and bring him closer to Allah. For verily the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

"Look after that which will benefit you" – reported by Muslim in his 'Saheeh'

Allah knows best.
